Meeting and Presentation: Frankly, My Dears ... When you buy an unused stamp—whether new or vintage—it is, in an important sense, a raw product. It has been designed and printed and issued, but it hasn’t yet ‘done its job.’ A stamp is a tiny artwork; the card or envelope you use it on becomes a much larger canvas. The postal possibilities are innumerable in terms of palette and placement, and the joys of overfranking. With stamps, you can send a message before you have written a word. Let us count the creative ways.

Presentation: Fine Otherwise. An art exhibit of early twentieth- century postcards of Portland’s Central Library, displayed (October 2025–April 2026) inside a working post office. Hear how a passion for postcards and a collecting impulse became an art show, and how philately, correspondence, and postal history shaped the project. Consider how stamps and postcards deepen our connection to place and to public institutions
